Our Services

Lamar County Animal Services provides a range of services focused on public-safety, responsible animal ownership, and humane care. Our operations are designed to prioritize community safety, legal compliance, and effective response to animal-related concerns.

 

Enforcement & Public Safety Services

As a detachment of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, our department provides professional enforcement of animal-related laws and ordinances. Our enforcement responsibilities include:

 

Criminal Investigations

  • Animal cruelty and abuse

  • Animal neglect

  • Animal abandonment

  • Dog fighting activity

  • Illegal breeding operations

 

Compliance & Ordinance Enforcement

  • Licensing and ordinance compliance

  • Sanitation violations

  • Nuisance complaints (including roaming animals)

  • Improper use of zoning related to animals

 

Inspections & Field Services

  • Livestock wellness checks

  • Inspections of kennels, breeders, and grooming facilities

 

Emergency Response

  • Dangerous or aggressive animals

  • Animal bites and rabies exposure concerns

  • Animals suspected of rabies

  • Animals struck by vehicles

  • Animals left inside vehicles

  • Animal-related incidents involving firearms or active threats

 

Shelter & Community Services

Our shelter operations support both enforcement efforts and community needs through responsible care and placement of animals.

  • Stray animal intake through Animal Control Officers

  • Reclaim services for lost pets

  • Adoption services during designated adoption hours

  • Public access to resources for spay, neuter, and rabies vaccinations

Partnerships & Community Programs

Lamar County Animal Services works with trusted partners to expand services and provide greater access to resources for the community.

 

The HELP Spay Neuter Clinic – Low-cost spay neuter services

 

Fix-A-Pet – Affordable veterinary care and sterilization programs

  • All participants must contact our front desk to register

  • Collaboration with animal rescues for placement support

  • Occasional rabies vaccination clinics

  • Community outreach events and public education initiatives

 

These partnerships allow us to extend services beyond our direct operational capacity while supporting long-term solutions to animal overpopulation and public health concerns.

 

Adoption & Placement

We work to place eligible animals into safe and responsible homes through structured adoption processes and partnerships.

  • Adoption opportunities available during designated hours

  • Coordination with approved rescue organizations

  • Efforts focused on responsible placement and positive outcomes

 

Service Limitations

To maintain effective operations and prioritize public safety, Lamar County Animal Services operates within defined service boundaries:

 

  • We do not accept owner surrenders unless they pose a risk to public safety, shows aggression towards their owner, or has bitten a person or attacked another animal.

  • We do not accept animals dropped off at the shelter

  • An Animal Control Officer must respond to the location of the animal found

  • We do not accept animals from outside Lamar County

  • We do not operate within the City of Barnesville jurisdiction

  • We do not trap, house, or relocate feral (community) cats

  • We do not provide animal training services

  • We do not offer boarding services

  • We do not provide veterinary or medical treatment services to the public

 

These limitations ensure that our resources remain focused on public safety, enforcement, and essential animal control services.
