About Lamar County Animal Services

Our Role in Public Safety

Lamar County Animal Services serves as the county’s primary department for addressing animal-related public safety concerns. Operating as a detachment of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office under the leadership of Sheriff Brad White, our responsibilities extend beyond traditional animal sheltering to include enforcement, investigations, and coordinated response to issues affecting the safety and well-being of the community.

Our role is to ensure that animal-related concerns are handled professionally, consistently, and in alignment with public safety standards.

Our Mission

Lamar County Animal Services is committed to protecting public safety and promoting responsible pet ownership through professional enforcement, education, and community engagement. We provide humane care for animals in need while working to reduce pet overpopulation through proactive programs and strategic partnerships. Our mission is to ensure the safety of our community and the ethical, compassionate treatment of all animals.

How We Operate

Our operations are structured to provide efficient and consistent service across both field enforcement and shelter functions. Calls for service are prioritized based on public safety impact, and our personnel respond with a focus on resolution, compliance, and accountability.

We operate with a system designed to:

  • Prioritize high-risk and public safety-related incidents

  • Enforce laws and ordinances with professionalism and consistency

  • Manage cases through clear documentation and follow-through

  • Utilize shelter resources responsibly and strategically

This approach allows us to address immediate concerns while also working toward long-term solutions that reduce repeat issues within the community.

Our Jurisdiction & Legal Authority

Lamar County Animal Services enforces applicable animal control ordinances and state laws within unincorporated Lamar County and contracted service areas. As a detachment of the Sheriff’s Office, our personnel operate within a law enforcement framework and maintain close coordination with deputies and other public safety departments.

Our jurisdiction is focused on animal-related issues that impact community safety, legal compliance, and public health. This includes situations where enforcement action, investigation, or intervention is necessary to resolve violations or protect the public.

We do not operate within incorporated municipal jurisdictions unless authorized by agreement. Residents within those areas should contact their respective local animal control provider.

Our Approach

We operate with a public safety-first mindset, recognizing that animal-related issues often intersect with broader community concerns. While humane care remains a priority, our focus is on addressing the root causes of problems through enforcement, education, and accountability.

Our approach is built on:

  • Accountability – Holding owners responsible for compliance

  • Prevention – Reducing issues through education and outreach

  • Efficiency – Structured response and resource management

  • Partnerships – Working with law enforcement, local government, and rescue organizations

This balance model allows us to serve both the immediate needs of the community and the long-term goals of animal welfare.
